Review

Aggregators reduce the time and effort needed to regularly check websites of interest for updates. For instance if you could use an aggregator to automatically stay up to date with changes to this Toolkit wiki – you wouldn’t have to keep checking the website regularly. In a sense, aggregators allow you to create your own "personal newspaper."

Aggregators subscribe to RSS feeds. Many sites have such feeds, you can tell by looking for the following symbol on a web page:

There are generally two types of Aggregator, online versions and desktop versions. However it is now possible to reed feeds as email.

Online aggregators

These are websites providing an aggregator service, for example: Google Reader.

Because the aggregator is online, it can be accessed anywhere by any user who is connected to the internet. This avoids problems with my IT department at work. It is simple and does the job, but little customisation is possible.

Desktop aggregators

These desktop applications typically are more flexible than their online cousins and may have additional features. An example is SharpReader.

I am not familiar with SharpReader – would anyone like to review?

Email

RSS feeds may be forwarded to a designated email address. Sites such as RSSFWD: offer this service.
